Our on road games to get you to from here to there!

The good old holiday drive as many remembered before the iPad was always long and maybe boring, the repetitive question of “are we there yet?” coming up maybe every 10 minutes after only 30 minutes from leaving home. And while modern technology may put a bit of a silencer in the back seat there is nothing more fun than enjoying a good old car game to get you to or from your destination.

Here are some of our favourite car games:

I Spy - Find the thing I’m looking for

Rules: Look for something insight and visbale. Begin the game with “I spy with my little eye something that _________”. The blank can be any clue for the object such as “starts with the letter K” or “is the colour red” or “is a circle”. Players have turns at guessing the item with yes or no questions, with the person who guesses correctly is the new spy.

Examples: “I spy with my little eye something beginning with A”

Car Colour Counting Game - Get as many cars as possible in a row

Rules: Each player gets a colour and when their car colour goes past in the opposite direction they start counting cars. When another players car colour goes by it is now their turn to start counting cars until another players car colour goes by. The idea is to get as many cars before another players colour goes by.

Examples: Player 1 (Red Cars), count 4 cars until Player 2 (Blue Car) goes past. Player two now counts cars until another play goes by.

The Movie Game - Connect the actors through movies they starred in.

Rules: The game starts with an actor/actress. The next person has to say a movie they were in. The following person has to state another actor/actress from that movie. It continues on. If somebody is incorrect, they have to sit out the next round.

Example: George Clooney, Ocean’s 11 – Brad Pitt, Fight Club

Cows on My Side - Shout out when you see cow

Rules: When you see a cow on your side of the road, you have to yell, “Cows on my side!”. Everytime you call a cow you get a point. If you see cows on the other side you say “Cows on your side!” If you call. “Cows on your side” before the person sees them, you steal a point. If anyone sees a cemetery they shout. “Ghost cow,” stealing all the other players’ points.

DJ - Guess the song

Rules: Pick on person to be the DJ. The Dj then pick a song and plays the first two seconds while everyone else in the car, has to guess what song it is. Have each player take turns of being the DJ.

Memory - Trying to remember what the person said before you.

Rules: The first player starts with a sentence with the second player then repeating the sentence an adds and item. Each player continues to mention everything that was said in the correct order and add a new item at the end. If you get it wrong you are out until a new game, the game goes on until everyone is out.

Example: I went to the store and bought ice-cream. I went to the store and bought ice-cream and dog food. I went to the store and bought ice-cream, dog food and apples.

Battle of the Bands - Two people battle to pick the best song on a category

Rules: One person gives a theme e.g. love songs or songs about road trips. Both contestants have 60 seconds to pick a song and then take a turn playing their selected song. The car then judges the two selections and picks a winner. Tally up score at the end of the game.

Car Cricket - Person with the most runs wins

Rules: One person comes up to bat and they score ‘runs’ when vehicles are seen. Vehicles must be moving and in the opposite direction to count as runs. White cars (and silver and grey) are worth one run, coloured cars (including black, excluding red) are worth two runs, motorbikes are worth 4 and trucks and busses are worth six runs. Any vehicle towing collects an “overthrow” run. Red Cars get you out. After everyone has a turn to bat, the person with the most runs wins.

The Silent Game (Parent Friendly) - Don’t make any noise

Rules: Be the quietest for the longest, by not speaking or making any noise. If you do speak or make a noise, you’re out.

Example:

So next time you are on the way to or from one of our parks in either Bendigo, Shepparton, Traralgon or Yarra Valley, these games might add a bit of fun to the trip!
