The State Coal Mine in Wonthaggi offers an inexpensive, historic day trip for the whole family. As the only historic coal mine experience in the Southern Hemisphere, it operated from 1909 to 1968, producing nearly 17 million tonnes of coal. Visitors can enjoy the Visitor Centre, a theatrette, a souvenir shop, and a cafe. Above-ground facilities, including a heritage walk, are free. Daily underground tours at 11:30 am and 2 pm require good fitness and sturdy shoes. The site provides a rich understanding of Australia’s cultural heritage and is perfect for a family outing on the Bass Coast.
